Historically, the European North Sea Coast has regularly been affected by disastrous storm surges. The projected impacts of climate change may lead to increased hazards and, thus, to the need to enhance resilience.
“The risk management at the Wadden Sea region should be seen as a multi-hazard task. We should consider different hazards such as demographic change, storm surges etc.”, says Birgit Gerkensmeier.

In the summer of 2003, Europe was hit by an extreme drought and heatwave with severe consequences. Due to climate change, a further increase in frequency, intensity and duration of heatwaves is predicted.

The ENHANCE project has produced a video showing concrete examples from the project’s case studies. The video serves as an introduction to the project and can be used to promote the results and findings of the studies.
Kristalina Georgieva is the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. She was interviewed by Arctik and UNISDR in the framework of the ENHANCE project on 7 July.
On the 23rd and 24th of October, Dr Swenja Surminski, Senior Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE) participated in the 6th Extreme Events and Climate Risks seminar organised by the Geneva Association in New York.
On this occasion, Dr Surminski was interviewed and talked about current developments in flood insurance in Europe, the role of insurance in disaster risk resilience and partnerships.
